Coonhound is a family of American scent hounds, not a single breed. The Black and Tan, Redbone, Bluetick, Treeing Walker, American English and Plott were all developed to trail raccoons at night and bay at the base of a tree. A dog listed as a Coonhound in Richmond may be one of these or a mix, so weights run from about 45 to 100 pounds.
Most have short, easy coats, long drooping ears and a sociable manner, and many are happy sofa companions indoors. Outdoors, the nose takes over. James River Park is home to raccoons, foxes and coyotes, and a coonhound will notice every one. Plan on a leash, patient food-based training and a dog that may bay when bored. Each dog differs, so look at energy and build rather than the label.
