The Cane Corso is a large-to-giant Italian mastiff, usually 85 to 120 pounds, with a broad head and a short, stiff coat in black, gray, fawn or red, often brindled. It worked as a farm guardian in southern Italy, nearly disappeared, and was rebuilt from a few survivors starting around the 1970s. Today it is one of the most popular breeds in the US.
Many Corsos are calm, affectionate and loyal to their families, but serious and watchful with strangers, and some don't get along with other dogs. In Richmond that means a secure fence, leashed outings, early socialization and steady reward-based training. Because the breed is so popular, dogs labeled Corsos are sometimes mixes, so judge the dog in front of you rather than the label.
