The English Bulldog, listed by the AKC simply as the Bulldog, descends from the Old English Bulldog, a fierce dog used in bull-baiting until England banned the sport in 1835. The breed was remade into a companion that kept the massive head, loose wrinkled skin and low, wide body but gained a much gentler nature. Adults typically weigh 40 to 55 pounds and have a short, smooth coat that sheds moderately.
Many Bulldogs are calm, affectionate and good-humored, content with short walks and long naps, though each dog is different. The flat face brings real trade-offs: breathing trouble, poor heat tolerance, skin-fold infections and joint problems are common, and lifespans usually run 7 to 10 years. In Norfolk, that means planning around humidity, keeping a Bulldog lean and finding a veterinarian who knows flat-faced breeds.
