A black Lab is a Labrador Retriever in the breed's original color, not a separate breed. The line traces to the St. John's water dogs of Newfoundland, later refined in Britain as gun dogs, which explains the dense water-resistant double coat, otter tail and love of retrieving. Black is the dominant color, and a small white chest spot is allowed.
Color doesn't change personality, and dogs vary with age, background and whether they come from field or show lines. Most are friendly, food-motivated and eager to please, with plenty of stamina. Norfolk's river paths and Bay shoreline give a water-loving dog room to burn energy, but expect shedding, careful portions and consistent training through a bouncy adolescence.
