The Collie grew out of Scottish sheep-herding dogs and was refined in Victorian Britain into the elegant dog most Americans picture from Lassie. There are two varieties of one breed: the Rough Collie, with a flowing mane and long coat, and the Smooth Collie, with a short, sleek one. Both are large, usually 50 to 75 pounds, with a dense double coat that sheds heavily.
Many Collies are gentle, sensitive and closely tuned to their families, and they have a long reputation as patient companions for children. Herding instincts can show up as barking, circling or nudging at running kids. Expect regular brushing, especially during the seasonal coat blowout, and plan on a vet who knows about MDR1 drug sensitivity. Collies vary, so judge each dog on its own personality.
