The American Hairless Terrier is the only hairless breed developed in the United States. It began in 1972 in Louisiana, when a hairless puppy named Josephine was born into a litter of coated Rat Terriers, and the AKC recognized the breed in 2016. Puppies are born with fuzz that falls out within weeks, while the coated variety has a short, smooth coat.
Adults typically weigh 12 to 28 pounds and bring plenty of terrier curiosity, with a taste for chasing and digging. In SLC, where the air is dry and the sun is strong at about 4,300 feet, skin care is part of the deal: sunscreen or a shirt outdoors, moisturizer when skin dries out, and a warm layer in winter. Dogs vary, so a coated dog or a calm adult may differ from this picture.
