Hound is a family of hunting dogs rather than one breed. On adoption listings it usually means a scent hound mix with Beagle, Coonhound or Foxhound ancestry, a short coat, long ears and a size anywhere from about 20 to 70 pounds. Sighthound types such as Greyhounds and Whippets turn up less often.
Hounds are typically friendly with people and other dogs, and they'd rather follow a trail than a command. In St. George, that nose meets real desert hazards: rattlesnakes and desert tortoises live around the Red Cliffs trails, so a hound that bolts after a smell needs a leash. Ancestry varies, so the size, energy and voice described on each listing say more than the label.
