Border Collies came out of the hills along the Anglo-Scottish border, where shepherds wanted a dog that could gather sheep with speed, focus and very little instruction. They're medium-sized, usually 30 to 55 pounds, with a rough or smooth double coat in black and white or many other colors. Many bond closely with their families and stay reserved with strangers.
In St. George, the main question is how to give that mind a job. Red-rock trails, fetch at a fenced park, agility classes and trick training all work, while a bored Border Collie may start herding kids, bikes or cars. Dogs vary, but most need daily exercise plus mental work, and the seasonal shedding is manageable with regular brushing.
