Retriever is a working-style label rather than a single breed. It covers gun dogs developed to find shot birds and carry them back gently, and most adoptable ones are Labrador or Golden mixes or dogs with that look and unknown ancestry. Chesapeake Bay, Flat-Coated, Curly-Coated and Toller types belong to the family too.
Most are medium to large, often 50 to 80 pounds, with a water-resistant double coat that sheds a good deal. Many are sociable, food-motivated and happiest carrying something in their mouths. In Tyler, that means a dog who wants a daily job, whether it's fetch, a trail walk or a training game, and who will leave hair on everything. Because ancestry varies, a dog's age and behavior tell you more than the label.
