Pit Bull Terrier is more of a type than a single breed. The label usually covers the American Pit Bull Terrier, American Staffordshire Terrier, Staffordshire Bull Terrier, American Bullies and many mixes with broad heads and muscular bodies. All trace back to nineteenth-century British bull-and-terrier dogs, and shelter breed labels often turn out to be wrong, so looks say little about a particular dog.
Most are medium-sized, between roughly 30 and 65 pounds, with a short, smooth coat that sheds moderately. Many are affectionate, eager to please and happiest next to their people. Their strength makes training and socialization important, and some dogs are choosy about other dogs. In Tyler, that means leash manners on the trails and a plan for hot afternoons.
