German Shepherds were developed in Germany around 1900 by Max von Stephanitz, who wanted a capable, intelligent herding dog. Adults are large and longer than tall, with erect ears, a bushy tail and a dense double coat, most often black and tan, black and red, sable or solid black. Males commonly weigh 65 to 90 pounds and females 50 to 70.
Many Shepherds are loyal, watchful and quick to learn, and a little reserved with strangers. That working drive is why they serve in police, search and assistance roles, and why a pet Shepherd needs a job: daily exercise, training and real time with its people. In Tyler, expect to schedule exercise around hot afternoons and to live with heavy shedding, especially during seasonal coat blows. Dogs vary, and a calm adult can be a great match.
