The name comes from the German words for badger and dog. Dachshunds were built to follow quarry underground, which explains the long body, short legs, deep chest and oversized bark. They come in two AKC sizes, standard and miniature, and three coats: smooth, longhaired and wirehaired. Colors run from red and black and tan to dapple and piebald.
Many Dachshunds are clever, curious and devoted to their people, with a stubborn streak and a strong urge to dig, chase and bark. Their shape brings one major health concern, intervertebral disc disease, so a lean body and limited jumping matter for life. In Tyler's yards, that digging instinct is worth planning for. Adopters who enjoy a big personality in a small package, and who stay patient through house-training, often find them endlessly entertaining.
