The Collie began as a Scottish sheep-herding dog and was refined in Victorian Britain into the elegant show dog people picture today. Rough Collies have the long, flowing coat and mane, while Smooth Collies have a short, dense one. Both are double-coated and shed heavily, and both come in sable and white, tricolor, blue merle or white. Lassie made the breed an American icon.
Collies are devoted, sensitive and smart, and many are gentle with children. Herding instinct can show up as barking or circling. In San Antonio, the thick coat is the main thing to plan around, since the heat is long and a Collie is happiest in air conditioning beside its people. Dogs vary, so judge each Collie by its own behavior rather than its breed.
