Chihuahuas take their name from the Mexican state of Chihuahua, and the AKC registered its first one in 1904. Most weigh 3 to 9 pounds, with an apple-shaped head, large upright ears and a smooth or long coat in nearly any color. They commonly live 12 to 16 years, so adopting one is a long commitment.
Many Chihuahuas are devoted, confident and quick to bark, and some are wary of strangers or snap when handled roughly. Gentle socialization helps, and every dog differs. Chihuahuas and mixes are among the most common small dogs in shelters, so adults of many ages and personalities turn up. In a house-heavy city like McKinney, a secure fence and supervised yard time matter as much as the walks.
