Bred in the Brittany region of northwestern France, this leggy, medium-sized bird dog was built to cover rough ground quickly, find birds by scent, hold a point and bring the game back. American hunters still call it the Brittany Spaniel, but the AKC dropped Spaniel from the name in 1982 because the breed works like a pointer. Most have a dense, flat or wavy orange-and-white or liver-and-white coat, often ticked or roan, with a naturally short or docked tail.
Brittanys tend to be happy, eager and soft-natured, bonding closely with their people and responding best to gentle, reward-based training. Their stamina is the main thing adopters should plan around: a bored Brittany often finds its own entertainment. Active households that can provide daily running, scent games and companionship usually find a cheerful, affectionate dog that settles well at home once its energy is spent.
