The Affenpinscher is a German toy breed that started out catching rats and mice in stables, kitchens and granaries. The name means monkey-like terrier, a nod to the bearded, bright-eyed face. Adults usually weigh 7 to 12 pounds and stand 9 to 12 inches tall, with a wiry, shaggy coat that's most often black and sheds little.
Many Affenpinschers are confident, curious and a bit comical, with far more swagger than their size suggests. They bond closely with their people and can be stubborn about training and housetraining. In Houston, that big personality fits condo and apartment life, but a toy dog needs supervision around larger dogs and a leash anywhere outside a fenced yard. Dogs vary, so judge the one in front of you.
