The Shar-Pei comes from southern China, where it guarded homes and livestock. Its deep wrinkles, hippopotamus-shaped muzzle, tiny folded ears and blue-black tongue make it unmistakable, and the harsh coat gives the breed its name, which means sand skin. It nearly disappeared in the twentieth century before being revived, and the AKC recognized it in 1992.
Most Shar-Peis are calm, clean and devoted to their families, but reserved with strangers and sometimes with other dogs. Dogs vary, so early socialization and steady, reward-based training matter more than the label. In Garland, plan for fold and ear care, a cool spot at home, and regular veterinary visits, since skin and eye problems are common in the breed.
