The Greyhound is an ancient sighthound type refined in England to chase game by sight. Its deep chest, long legs and flexible back let it top 40 miles per hour, yet most Greyhounds in the United States today are retired racers, usually two to five years old, who are still learning what a sofa is.
Indoors, many are calm and quiet, sprinting hard for a few minutes and then sleeping much of the day. That suits Garland's mix of quiet suburban streets and apartment complexes. Thin skin and a short coat mean they chill quickly and need soft bedding, and a strong chase instinct means a secure fence and a leash matter, especially with coyotes reported in residential Garland. Dogs vary, so some are more playful or more anxious than others.
