The name means "badger dog" in German, and the breed was built to follow quarry underground. That's why the body is long and low, the chest deep and the bark surprisingly big. Standards run roughly 16 to 32 pounds and miniatures 11 pounds and under, in smooth, longhaired or wirehaired coats.
In Garland, that history shows up in everyday ways: digging along a fence line, chasing squirrels and announcing every delivery driver. Most Dachshunds are curious, bold and devoted to their families, with a stubborn streak that rewards short, patient training. Coat care depends on type, since smooth coats need little while longhaired and wirehaired dogs need regular brushing. Dachshunds vary, so each dog's own habits matter more than breed reputation.
