The Catahoula was developed in Louisiana to find and hold feral hogs and to gather semi-wild cattle, and that job shaped a lean, muscular dog that varies a lot in size and build. Coats are short and close, usually merle, brindle or solid, and eyes can be blue, amber, brown or mismatched. The breed is also unusually good at problem-solving, which is why a bored one can open gates and latches.
In Garland, that means picking a household that can offer structure: a securely fenced yard, a daily outing with real running in it, and training that starts early and stays consistent. Many dogs labeled Catahoula are mixes, so their size, energy and coat can land anywhere in the breed's range. Spend time with the dog in front of you rather than relying on the label.
