The Soft Coated Wheaten Terrier comes from Ireland, where it worked for generations as an all-purpose farm dog, catching rats, guarding the yard and helping with livestock. Its soft, silky, gently wavy coat comes in shades of wheat and falls forward over the eyes. Puppies often start darker and lighten until around age two.
A Wheaten's people-loving nature suits households that are home a good deal, whether that's a house with a fenced yard or an apartment on the Near Southside. The coat sheds little but tangles easily, and the terrier streak shows up as stubbornness and a quick urge to chase squirrels. Dogs vary, and a Wheaten's own history and personality matter more than the breed label. The breed also has a higher risk of protein-losing kidney and intestinal disease, which a veterinarian can screen for.
