The Pointer is a lean, elegant sporting dog developed in England from the 1600s to find game birds and hold a rigid point that shows the hunter where they're hiding. Often called the English Pointer, it has a short, glossy coat, usually white with liver, lemon, orange or black patches or ticking. It sheds moderately year-round, but the coat takes little care.
Many Pointers are gentle, even-tempered and affectionate at home, though they can be reserved with strangers. They have tremendous stamina and a strong drive to range and chase, so a quick walk around the block rarely satisfies them. Adopters who run or hike tend to enjoy them most, provided they can offer secure fencing, steady recall practice and a warm indoor place to rest. Each dog varies, so watch how a particular Pointer behaves.
