The Standard Poodle is the largest of the three Poodle sizes, a square, athletic dog usually 18 to 24 inches tall and 40 to 70 pounds. Its roots are in water retrieving, probably in Germany, and the famous clip began as a practical way to keep joints and vital organs warm while swimming. The dense, curly coat comes in solids from black and white to apricot and silver.
Standards are known for being clever, sensitive and people-focused, and many stay playful well into adulthood. They generally do best living indoors with the family rather than spending their days alone in a yard. The low-shedding coat never stops growing, so plan on professional grooming every six to eight weeks, brushing at home, and real daily activity for a dog sportier than its reputation.
