The Pointer, sometimes called the English Pointer, is a lean sporting dog that typically weighs 45 to 75 pounds and stands 23 to 28 inches tall. It was developed in England to find game and hold a rigid point, and its short, glossy coat is usually white with liver, lemon, orange or black markings. Most live 12 to 15 years.
That athletic build fits El Paso's sunny, dry days and cool mornings, but the thin coat offers little protection on freezing nights or on cactus-lined desert trails. Pointers are usually gentle and loyal with family and can be reserved with strangers, though every dog differs. The coat sheds moderately and needs only a quick weekly brush, so exercise, fencing and training take most of the effort.
