The Maltese is a toy dog that usually weighs under eight pounds, with a long, silky white single coat and no undercoat. It sheds very little, but the hair keeps growing and tangles fast, so it needs frequent brushing or a short puppy cut. Its roots go back to small white lap dogs of the Mediterranean, though the modern breed took shape in Victorian Britain.
Many Maltese are gentle, affectionate and surprisingly bold, and plenty stay playful well into their teens. In El Paso, that often means a dog who spends the afternoon heat on a cool floor beside you. Plan for grooming, daily tooth care, patient housetraining and company through the day. Every dog varies, so look at the dog's own habits rather than the breed alone.
