Cairn Terriers come from the Scottish Highlands and the Isle of Skye, where they bolted foxes and vermin out of rock piles called cairns. They're short-legged and sturdy, with a foxy face, small upright ears and a harsh, weather-resistant double coat in wheaten, red, gray, brindle or nearly black, but never white. Brindle Cairns often change color for years as they mature.
Cairns tend to be cheerful, curious and confident, friendly with most people but independent enough to ignore a request they find dull. Expect digging, a strong urge to chase small animals and barking when bored. The low-shedding coat stays neat with weekly brushing and periodic stripping or trims. Temperament varies from dog to dog, so spend time with a Cairn before deciding.
