The Maltese is a toy dog descended, most likely, from the small white companions of the Mediterranean that appear in Greek and Roman writing. Today's breed was largely standardized in Victorian Britain. Under the floor-length, silky white coat is a fine-boned dog that usually weighs four to eight pounds, with a single coat, no undercoat and very little shedding.
In Corpus Christi, the coat is the main chore. A long coat mats quickly, so many owners keep a short puppy cut that's easier to brush and easier to keep clean in the heat. Many Maltese are gentle, affectionate and playful, but they're also fragile and often dislike long hours alone. Daily tooth care and patient housetraining are part of the deal, and each dog's personality varies.
