Welsh Terriers come from the hills of Wales, where farmers kept them by the 1700s to hunt foxes, badgers and rats, and the breed is often counted among the oldest terriers in Britain. A sturdy, square little dog of about 20 pounds, the Welshie wears a hard, wiry black-and-tan jacket, small folded ears and a confident, rectangular head that makes it look like a smaller Airedale.
Many Welsh Terriers are cheerful, curious and friendly with people, steadier than some terriers but still full of game spirit and opinions. They enjoy play, walks and family activity, and they often keep a strong urge to dig, chase small animals and bark at intruders. The wire coat sheds very little but needs regular stripping or clipping, so grooming is a real part of life with one.
