The Greyhound is an ancient sighthound refined in England to chase game by sight. Its deep chest, long legs and flexible back allow speeds above 40 miles per hour, yet the home personality is usually mellow. Adults typically weigh 55 to 85 pounds, stand 25 to 30 inches tall and live ten to fourteen years.
In Austin, the coat and the chase instinct matter most. The short, smooth coat sheds lightly, but thin skin and little body fat mean a Greyhound can overheat in a Central Texas summer and chill in a hard freeze. Many have a strong prey drive and belong on a leash or inside secure fencing, and each dog differs in how it reacts to cats and small animals.
