Dr. Antonio Nores Martínez developed the Dogo Argentino in Córdoba, Argentina, starting in the 1920s, as a brave pack hunter for wild boar and puma. He built on the now-extinct Córdoba fighting dog, adding breeds such as the Bull Terrier, Great Dane and Boxer. The result is a muscular, all-white dog with a short, smooth coat, typically 80 to 100 pounds, now recognized by the AKC in the Working Group.
Many Dogos are loyal and playful with their families, yet confident and strongly driven to chase. They need early socialization, consistent training and plenty of exercise. Congenital deafness tied to the white coat is a known concern. Austin has no breed-specific dog rules, but landlords and insurers may still limit the breed, so sort that out before adopting.
