The Cane Corso is an Italian mastiff that worked southern Italian farms as a guardian, cattle driver and boar hunter. The modern breed was rebuilt from a few survivors in Puglia starting around the 1970s. Adults are muscular and rectangular, with a short, stiff coat in black, gray, fawn or red, often brindled, and most weigh between 85 and 120 pounds.
Many Corsos are calm and devoted at home yet watchful with strangers, so socialization and steady reward-based training matter. In Abilene, that means planning for visitors at the door, a secure fence and leashed outings. Many shelter dogs labeled Corsos are mixes, so get to know the dog in front of you rather than relying on the label. Coat care is simple, with moderate, seasonal shedding.
