Retriever isn't a single breed. It's a type of gun dog developed to find shot birds and carry them back gently, and in Memphis it usually means a Labrador or Golden Retriever mix, or a dog with that look and unknown ancestry. Most weigh 50 to 80 pounds and have a water-resistant coat that sheds a good deal.
Many are sociable, eager to please and food-motivated, and they like to carry things in their mouths. Expect a bouncy adolescence, daily exercise and hair on the furniture. In Memphis, that means pairing regular walks with a plan for muggy afternoons and the wet spring months. Dogs vary a lot, so time spent with the dog in person tells you more than the label does.
