The Maltese is an old Mediterranean toy breed, though today's version was largely shaped in Victorian Britain. Under the floor-length, silky white coat is a fine-boned dog that usually weighs between four and eight pounds. The single coat has no undercoat and sheds very little, but it mats quickly unless it's brushed often or kept in a short puppy cut, which is the easier choice for many Memphis households.
Many Maltese are gentle, affectionate and surprisingly fearless, and they often stay playful well into old age. They're easy to carry and easy to injure, so they suit careful adults or calm, older children. Plan for regular grooming, daily tooth care, patient housetraining and a dog that dislikes long hours alone. Dogs vary, so spend time with the one you're considering.
