A black Labrador Retriever is a Lab in the breed's original and most familiar color, not a separate breed. Descended from the St. John's water dogs of Newfoundland and refined in Britain as gun dogs, Labs have a broad head, an otter tail, a dense water-resistant double coat and an athletic frame, usually 55 to 80 pounds.
Color doesn't change personality. Labs are typically friendly, food-motivated and eager to please, though field-bred dogs are often leaner and more driven than show-bred ones, and every dog varies. In Memphis's humid climate, expect steady shedding with heavier seasonal blowouts, so regular brushing, careful portions and a slow-maturing, bouncy adolescence are all part of the deal.
