Named for Catahoula Parish in Louisiana, this athletic working dog was developed to find and hold feral hogs and gather semi-wild cattle. Selection favored ability over looks, so size and build vary, with most adults between 50 and 95 pounds. Many have a merle "leopard" coat and glass-blue or mismatched eyes, but brindle and solid-colored dogs are common too.
That heritage fits people who hike and have time for training. Catahoulas are intelligent, independent and loyal to their family, but often wary of strangers and sometimes selective with other dogs or small animals. Many shelter dogs labeled Catahoula are mixes, so each dog's own personality matters more than the label. Early socialization and firm, kind, reward-based training help.
