Australian Cattle Dogs were developed in nineteenth-century Australia to drive cattle over long distances, and the compact, muscular build and weatherproof coat show it. Most weigh 35 to 50 pounds and wear a short blue or red speckled coat that needs little more than weekly brushing. Lifespans of 12 to 16 years are common.
In Johnson City, a Heeler's stamina matches the hills, greenways and cold snaps, but its drive needs a job. Many bond closely with one person, stay reserved with strangers and may nip at heels, bikes or kids. Early socialization, reward-based training and puzzle toys help. Dogs vary, so a Heeler's own personality matters more than its breed label when you meet one.
