The Basset Hound is a low-slung scent hound that began in France, trailing rabbit and hare at a pace hunters could follow on foot. Its long ears, loose skin and heavy bone create that famous mournful look, and its nose is second only to the Bloodhound's for following ground scent. Adults usually weigh 40 to 65 pounds while standing just 11 to 15 inches tall.
At home, Bassets tend to be mellow, social and happy to lounge near the family, though they can be stubborn and loud. In Franklin, that means planning for rainy-weather mud, wiping ears and paws, and measuring portions, since extra weight is hard on a long back. Dogs vary, so think honestly about whether a Basset's pace and volume fit your household.
