Count Adolf Hamilton, founder of the Swedish Kennel Club, showed the first Hamiltonstovares in 1886. The breed was developed to trail hare and fox on its own rather than in a pack, using its voice so hunters could follow. It's a handsome, athletic, medium-sized hound with a harsh, close-lying coat in tricolor: a black mantle with rich tan and white markings.
Many Hamiltonstovares are friendly, even-tempered and good-natured with people and other dogs, but the nose still leads, and a fresh scent can override recall in an instant. They need daily exercise, patient training and secure fencing. In Sioux Falls, that means a sturdy fence at home and a leash on the trail, though every dog varies.
