The Belgian Shepherd is one breed with four varieties: the long black Groenendael, the long fawn Tervuren, the short fawn Malinois and the rough-coated Laekenois. The AKC registers them separately and calls the Groenendael the Belgian Sheepdog. All are square, elegant dogs, usually 40 to 75 pounds, and many dogs labeled Belgian Shepherd in shelters are Malinois or Malinois mixes.
They're watchful, devoted and built to work, which is why police and military units use them. In Sioux Falls, that means a dog who wants a daily job, like trail miles along the Big Sioux or training games indoors during a cold snap. The double coat handles prairie winters well but sheds heavily in spring and fall. Dogs vary, so judge the dog in front of you.
