The Beauceron is France's largest native herding dog, developed on the plains around Chartres to move and guard big flocks of sheep over long distances. Its short, dense, weatherproof coat comes in black and tan or harlequin, and the tan leg markings earned it the nickname red stockings. Double dewclaws on each hind leg are a breed hallmark.
Beaucerons are typically intelligent, confident and deeply loyal to their families, yet reserved with strangers. Many are sensitive to tone and bond closely with one or two people. They mature slowly, often not settling until about age three, so adopters need time for daily exercise, ongoing socialization and calm, consistent training rather than harsh correction.
