Beagles were developed in England as small pack hounds for trailing hare, and the modern breed took shape in the 1830s. They're compact, sturdy dogs with a domed skull, long soft ears and a white-tipped tail, usually in tricolor. In the U.S. they come in two sizes, up to 13 inches and 13 to 15 inches, and most weigh roughly 18 to 30 pounds.
Many Beagles are cheerful and sociable, and their noses drive nearly everything they do. Expect baying, a talent for finding food and moderate shedding that picks up in spring and fall. Dogs vary, and shelter Beagles are often mixes, so a dog's age, energy and behavior tell you more than the label. In Sioux Falls, that means a good harness, secure fencing and a plan for winter walks.
