Australian Cattle Dogs, also called Blue Heelers or Queensland Heelers, were developed in nineteenth-century Australia to drive cattle over long distances in heat and dust. Settlers crossed collie-type herding dogs with dingoes, and the result is a compact, muscular dog of roughly 35 to 50 pounds with a weatherproof double coat in blue or red speckle.
That tough coat and steady stamina carry over well to South Dakota seasons, but the working drive comes with the package. Heelers are alert, clever and often attached to one person, and they may nip at heels or chase bikes and kids. Dogs vary, and many settle into devoted, long-lived companions when they get training and daily work. Sioux Falls suits that routine, with trails, six city dog parks and room to move.
