Anatolian Shepherds are livestock guardians from the high plateau of central Turkey, where dogs of this type have protected sheep and goats from wolves and other predators for a very long time. They live alongside the flock and decide for themselves when to step in. Adults are big and rangy, often 80 to 150 pounds, with a short to medium double coat that is usually fawn with a dark mask, though many colors occur.
At home, Anatolians tend to be calm, observant and loyal, but the guarding instinct stays strong. Many are wary of strangers, protective of their territory and inclined to roam if a fence allows it. They mature slowly, think for themselves and respond poorly to harsh handling. In Sioux Falls, that means planning for secure fencing, patient socialization and a dog whose judgment may not always match yours.
