The American Water Spaniel was developed in the 19th-century lake country of Wisconsin, where hunters wanted a compact dog that could ride in a small boat, flush birds and retrieve from cold water. It's Wisconsin's state dog and still an uncommon sporting breed. Adults typically weigh 25 to 45 pounds and wear a dense, curly coat in liver, brown or chocolate that sheds water well.
That Upper Midwest heritage suits a Sioux Falls winter reasonably well. Many American Water Spaniels are devoted to their families, reserved with strangers and clever enough to get bored quickly, and some bark at noises. They often stay youthful for a couple of years. Gentle, reward-based training works best, and the curly coat needs regular brushing and ear care. Dogs vary, so judge the dog in front of you.
