In the United States, Cocker Spaniel means the American Cocker, the smallest dog in the AKC Sporting Group and a breed that topped American popularity charts for eighteen years. Its spaniel ancestors flushed woodcock for English hunters, and in America the breed later became a smaller dog with a rounded head, large dark eyes, a short square muzzle and a long, silky coat in black, solid colors or parti-colors.
Many Cockers are gentle, cheerful companions who want to be near their people and respond best to soft, patient training. They are adaptable about space but not about upkeep: the coat needs regular brushing and professional trims, the long ears need weekly checks, and the breed carries real eye and ear risks. Adopters who enjoy grooming and daily walks often find a deeply affectionate housemate.
