Shih Tzus were palace dogs, developed in China from small Tibetan dogs sent to the imperial court. Their name comes from the Mandarin word for lion, and the breed reached England around 1930 and the United States after World War II. A Shih Tzu is a sturdy toy dog, usually 9 to 16 pounds, with a short square muzzle, large dark eyes and a long, flowing double coat in almost any color.
Many Shih Tzus are friendly, outgoing and happiest close to their people, and they usually get along with visitors and other pets. Dogs vary, though, and some are stubborn about housetraining. In Greenville's humid climate, care centers on the coat, which mats quickly without regular brushing or a trim, and on the eyes, teeth and breathing issues that come with a flat face. Shedding is low, but the breed isn't hypoallergenic.
