Retriever isn't one breed. On adoption listings it usually means a Labrador or Golden mix, or a dog with that look and unknown ancestry, and the wider family includes Chesapeake Bay, Flat-Coated, Curly-Coated and Toller retrievers. Developed to find shot birds and carry them back gently, these dogs tend to be sociable, trainable and food-motivated, and most land in the 50 to 80 pound range.
In Columbia, that sturdy build and love of company fit a city with lots of leashed trails and river access. Expect a water-resistant double coat that sheds a good deal, a bouncy adolescence and a dog who wants to be indoors with the family. Every dog differs, so age, energy level and the dog's own history matter more than the label.
