Feist is a type of small American hunting dog rather than one tightly standardized breed. Descended from terriers brought by British settlers and crossed with other dogs in the rural South, feists were built to tree squirrels and catch vermin. The United Kennel Club recognizes the Treeing Feist and the Mountain Feist, and most stand 10 to 18 inches tall with a short, smooth coat and a natural, bobbed or docked tail.
Feists are alert, energetic and affectionate, with a sharp eye for movement and a strong prey drive. They're usually quieter than many terriers until they spot something up a tree. Squirrels are easy to find in almost any Columbia park or yard, so a secure leash and a tall fence matter. Dogs vary, and many feists in shelters are mixes, so judge the dog in front of you.
