The Bedlington Terrier is a small terrier from the mining district around Bedlington in Northumberland, England. Its pear-shaped head, woolly topknot and arched back give it a lamb-like look. Miners valued it for catching vermin and running down rabbits, and likely Whippet ancestry explains its speed.
Most Bedlingtons are gentle, affectionate housemates who stay fairly calm indoors and spring to life at the sight of a squirrel. The crisp, curly coat sheds very little but needs regular brushing and professional clipping. The breed also carries an inherited liver disorder called copper toxicosis, so a veterinarian can guide testing and diet. Dogs vary, so judge each one on its own merits.
