Hound is a label for a large family of hunting dogs, not a single breed. On adoption listings it usually means a scent hound mix with Beagle, Coonhound or Foxhound roots: long ears, a short coat and a voice that carries. Sighthound types such as Greyhounds and Whippets turn up less often. Adult weights run roughly 20 to 70 pounds.
Most hounds are friendly and easygoing with people and other dogs, and happiest with their nose to the ground. In Warwick that suits shoreline and park walks, but it also means leashes, secure fences and a plan for howling. Hounds can wander off after a scent, and training takes patience. Because ancestry varies so much, size, energy and voice differ from one hound to the next, so read each listing's description closely.
